Eckart Conze richtet seinen Blick auf die jüngste Debatte über das Kaiserreich und seinen Ort in der deutschen Geschichte. Er verfolgt dabei zum einen historiographische Entwicklungen, nicht zuletzt die Historisierung des Kaiserreichs nach 1945, und diskutiert die Bedeutung der Sonderwegsthese in diesem Zusammenhang; zum anderen fragt er nach den Gründen gegenwärtiger Bemühungen in Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit, die Geschichte des Nationalstaats von 1871 zu entproblematisieren und nicht zuletzt die Geschichte des Kaiserreichs vom Aufstieg, der Machtübernahme, der Herrschaft und den Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus zu trennen. Darüber hinaus richtet der Beitrag exemplarisch einen kritischen Blick auf zentrale Entwicklungen der Zeit nach 1871: von der politisch-konstitutionellen Ordnung über die Dynamiken der Fundamentalpolitisierung bis hin zur Außen- und Kolonialpolitik.Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Kaiserreichsdebatte lotet Christine Krüger Potenziale und Schwierigkeiten der transnationalen und vergleichenden Kaiserreichsgeschichte aus. Exemplarisch nimmt sie dazu Antisemitismus, die Frauenbewegung und die bürgerliche Sozialreform in den Blick.
