Die Mainzer Republik wird heute eher über- als unterschätzt, (…), so urteilte Franz Dumont in seiner Dissertation von 1978. Dumont schrieb diesen Satz aber nicht nur vor dem Hintergrund, daß wir unsere heutige deutsche Demokratie anders verstehen, sie anders leben und weiterentwickeln als die kleine Anzahl pfälzischer und rheinhessischer Revolutionsanhänger im Winter und Frühjahr 1792/93 mit ihrem eigenen Verständnis von "Demokratie": Diese hatten das Wort Demokratie in jenen Wochen zu einem System von physischer und psychischer Gewalt pervertiert, vor allem, um die ihnen von den französischen Machthabern zugekommenen neuen Aufgaben und die damit erwachsenen persönlichen Vorteile zu sichern. Der Jurist und Mainzer Ehrenbürger Dr. Bockenheimer hat mit dem vorliegend wieder aufgelegten Büchlein, für das Dr. Dr. Mark Scheibe ein umfassendes Vorwort verfaßte, einen wertvollen Beitrag geleistet, was aus den ersten Mainzer "Patrioten" wurde – wobei vor dem zeitgeschichtlichen Rahmen (seine Veröffentlichung erschien 1873) der Titel "Mainzer Patrioten" als ein offenbar gezielt vorgebrachtes Wortspiel zu sehen ist: Bockenheimers "Patrioten" sind die Antitypen, eine Minorität innerhalb der Bevölkerung, die diesen Protagonisten der "Mainzer Republik" zunächst abwartend, dann aber durch die ausufernde Gewalt ablehnend gegenüberstand.
