Matthias Drobinski und Thomas Urban erzĂ€hlen keine Heiligengeschichte, sondern portrĂ€tieren eine faszinierende Persönlichkeit, die RevolutionĂ€r und ReaktionĂ€r in Einem war. Unter dem Eindruck des nationalsozialistischen Terrorregimes entschied sich Karol Wojtyla fĂŒr das Priestertum. Er entwickelte eine Theologie, die von der Freiheit und WĂŒrde des Menschen ausgeht, der ĂŒber sich und seine materielle Existenz hinausstrebt. Er half durch sein Auftreten gegen den Kommunismus, den Eisernen Vorhang einzureißen, aber unerbittlich kritisierte er auch den Materialismus des Westens. In einem mutigen Schritt hat er als Papst um Vergebung gebeten fĂŒr die Schuld der Vergangenheit. Doch mit seinem Festhalten an einer rigiden Sexualmoral, dem Nein zur Frauenordination und der Verkennung des Missbrauchsskandals hinterließ Johannes Paul II. seiner Kirche ein schweres Erbe.
