Der 1714 als Sohn eines Freibauern bei Gumbinnen geborene und 1780 verstorbene litauische Lehrer und lutherische Pfarrer Kristijonas Donelaitis gilt im heutigen Litauen als Begründer der litauischen Literatur, auch wenn von der poetischen Produktion des begabten und vielseitigen, dem Leben und all seinen Erscheinungen zugewandten Donelaitis zu Lebzeiten nichts veröffentlicht wurde und nur in Abschriften zirkulierte.
Sein Hauptwerk ist eine nach und nach entstandene Folge von Szenen aus dem Leben der litauischen Bauern in Ostpreußen, geordnet nach den vier Jahreszeiten und in Hexametern verfasst, die den Singsang der gesprochenen Sprache wunderbar wiedergeben und von Arbeit und Festen, von der Landschaft und den Tieren, von Frondienst, Freude und Last, vom dörflichen Zusammenleben erzählen. Freundlich und verspielt, der Welt zugewandt, aber auch zu Verantwortung und Frömmigkeit mahnend, sind die Verse ein anschaulicher, reicher, unterhaltsamer Genuss. 1977 nahm die UNESCO das Buch in die Bibliothek der literarischen Meisterwerke auf.
