Die Beiträge untersuchen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen unbelebter und belebter Materie in Kunst, Literatur, Technik und anderen Bereichen menschlicher Wahrnehmung und menschlichen Ausdrucks. Gezeigt wird, wie Organismen durch gezielte Strategien ein Objektstatus zugeschrieben wird und wie Objekte aufgrund bestimmter Eigenschaften als lebendig erscheinen. Die vermehrte Kritik an Anthropozentrismus und Animismus fordert dazu auf, diesen Austauschprozessen genauer nachzugehen.
