Social Change and Status of Women

About this book

Essay from the year 2009 in the subject History - Basics, , course: UG, language: English, abstract: In this paper an attempt has been made to expose the status of women in Indian society and how it has undergone radical changes from time to time according to the law of nature, to say through the process of social change. Special reference will be made to the women of North East India, both hills and plains. Change is the law of nature. In this universe everything is subject to change. Some changes are observable some take place silently. Some are inevitable some are unavoidable. Changes in the society are the outcome of different factors like cultural, religious, economic, scientific or technological factors. Change refers to an alteration in the social structure of a social group or society, i.e. a change in the nature, social institutions, social behaviors or social relations of a society. It happens everywhere but the rate of change varies from place to place. By considering the status of women from the epic age to the 21st century one should agree that the roles of women are not only confined to motherhood and domestic role. The concept of women empowerment developed in 1985 at the International Women's Conference held at Nairobi, and their changing roles in the society elevated them to a higher esteem. However the fact remains as a different from the media and reality. While the legislature, reformative, educational, health and employment strategies have given Indian women a significant boost in their struggle for equal rights in the society, a lot is yet to be done in terms of giving them enough confidence to carry this struggle further.
