Our modern society is based on plastics. However, resources and end-of-life management are still a challenge today. Intelligent material design is a key to sustainability. Both the production of polymers with specific material properties and their life cycle can serve as levers. This work shows an approach to improve the understanding by systematically investigating the basic process steps for the catalytic solution polymerisation of linear low-density polyethylene. By investigating the time-dependent reaction rate constants, the general kinetics of the catalytic system during homo-polymerisation can be identified. In a second step, the microstructural aspects, which are decisive for the polymer properties, are systematically adjusted. The molecular weight is shaped by controlling the chain transfer agent. By screening different formulations, the incorporation behaviour of the catalytic system can be quantified for a wide range of process parameters.
