Ziel des Bandes ist es, die Bedeutung dieser Thematik aufzuzeigen – denn von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen hat sich die Stadtgeschichte bisher nicht mit der Geschichte der Korruption beschäftigt.

Die Beiträge decken eine breite Palette von Städten in Ländern in und außerhalb Europas ab, darunter Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Spanien, die Niederlande, Russland, Kanada, die USA und China. Zeitliche Schwerpunkte sind die Phase der Urbanisierung um 1900 sowie die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
