Serebryakov, an elderly professor, and his beautiful young wife Yelena return from the city to their country estate, managed by his daughter Sonya and brother-in-law Uncle Vanya. The country doctor Astrov goes to and from the estate, bored with his life. Sonya has feelings for Astrov, while both Astrov and Vanya compete for Yelena's affections.
Vanya, nearing middle age, feels life has passed him by and deeply resents Serebryakov. As the play progresses, these simmering resentments soon boil over.
First published in 1897, Uncle Vanya is one of Chekhov's most highly regarded plays, still regularly performed worldwide.
Perfect for readers who appreciate masterful character studies and the profound beauty found in life's quiet disappointments. Essential reading for lovers of classic Russian literature.
