The Egyptian Book of the Dead
The Theban Recension with Commentary
About this book
The hymns, the negative confession, the weighing of the heart and the spells for coming forth by day, in the translation of the keeper of the British Museum's Egyptian antiquities. Le Page Renouf published it in parts between 1892 and 1897 and did not live to finish it; Édouard Naville completed the last chapters. It is the Theban funerary book as the papyri of the New Kingdom preserve it, with a commentary on every chapter that is still worth reading for its arguments about single words. Forty-one plates of painting, from Wilkie to Moreau, carry the Egyptian and allegorical themes of the papyri, including Oedipus and the Sphinx and Pasture, Egypt.
