The Discipline Coach

If you're thinking discipline is keeping them in check, sorting them out, showing them what's good for them, because it's for their own good, because it's what the youth of today are so sorely lacking... you've got the wrong book

About this book

Jim Roberson believes that school should be the place where you learn all you need to learn to succeed in life, whatever form that success may take. Most importantly, in his view, you have to learn discipline. For Jim, behaviour is the 'B-word' and he forbids mention of it. Discipline, on the other hand, is neatly described not as something others do to you to get you to behave nor even as something you do to yourself, but rather as 'what you do for yourself'. What Jim advocates is a partnership between children and schools, whereby schools open up to teaching children everything they will need to prosper at and beyond school, no matter what career or life choices they make. In return, children will start to acquire and then implement the strategies and benefits that come with self-discipline on an ongoing basis. Jim has worked with some of the most challenging young people in the UK and, whether he's working with experienced classroom practitioners, struggling supply teachers, students themselves or even the police, he delivers powerful, practical, common sense strategies that bring the best out of some of the most demanding and hard-to-reach young people.

During my career coaching
American football …

88 The Discipline Coach
… I have had two great jobs:
Head Coach of Tuckahoe High School, New York (1983–1984) and Head Coach, of the Southern Sundevils in
Portsmouth, UK (1998–2006).
When I arrived, both programs were going through rough patches. During my first season at Tuckenhoe High we won
one, lost seven. In the second season we won seven, lost one, drew one. And we were Bowl Champs in Westchester
County, New York. Hell, yeah, that’s as good as it sounds.
In my first season with the Southern Sundevils we won six, lost five, and reached the playoffs. In the second season, my
first as Head Coach, we were league champions. We did that three times in total.

DISCIPLINE ACTION PLAN 89
Each time, the first step was never about the football, but it was also all about
the football. Step one was to establish an ethos of discipline.
As a coach, the first step to developing champions is to get them to buy into
being champions. This leads to doing the things,
all the things,
that make you a champion.

And this is where the windmill comes in handy.

DISCIPLINE ACTION PLAN 91
This sign:
represents a windmill.
It’s about strength.
Resilience.
The ability to keep going no matter what life throws at you.
Turning. Turning.
It is a symbol from my African-American heritage – about the power we once
had and the ability to face life’s difficulties.

92 The Discipline Coach
After all, discipline is about
keeping on keeping on.
No matter what life is
throwing at you.

DISCIPLINE ACTION PLAN 93
When I’m working with young people I use the windmill symbol as the central
structure for what I call their Discipline Action Plan. It will help them achieve
anything they want to.
Anything. As Will Smith likes to say:
‘Nothing is unrealistic.’*
*How often do teachers decide for young people what is or isn’t within their grasp?
Stop it. Don’t limit them with your limited view of the possible. Listen to Will Smith.
