London

Various items from the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, 1953.
C ivilized and proper tradition is the backbone of the English way of life. Attending the coronation of the queen would have been the highlight of any trip to London, and pamphlets, postcards, and even matchbooks carefully preserved memories of the occasion: a postcard of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, postmarked December 5, 1952, captures the iconic figure in her youth.
In its day, Trans World Airways was the finest way to fly. Lucky passengers received a handy booklet of travel tips for Britain in 1960. Luggage labels and receipts would have been from the very best hotelsāthe Regent Palace, Royal Court, Savoy, and Cumberland.
To navigate the streets of London, guidebooks and maps were a must, from a 1948 London trams and trolleys pamphlet to a collection of colorful maps of central London. And no trip to London would be complete without watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, as a 1955 childrenās map of London reminds us.
