Jesus’ Teaching
Jesus
■ Made heavy use of parables (comparisons)
■ Designated himself as “the Son of Man”
■ Addressed God as “Abba” (“Father”)
■ Stressed loving God & one’s neighbor, & the Golden Rule
■ Featured God’s kingdom/rule, partly realized in Jesus’ ministry but yet to be completed at the second coming
Mark
■ Author: John Mark wrote as an “evangelist” & recorder of Peter’s reminiscences.
■ Date: John Mark wrote before or around AD 70.
■ Purpose: Mark is oriented to Jesus’ mighty deeds & words as God’s Son & is written to encourage persecuted Christians or counteract the shame of Jesus’ crucifixion.
■ Reading Mark with interpretation:
• John the Baptist is portrayed as preparer of Jesus’ way & baptizer of Jesus & others.
• Jesus’ temptation occasioned the acknowledgment of him as the Christ, God’s Son, by Satan, wild beasts, & angels.
• Jesus’ authority, displayed in teaching, exorcisms, & healings, confirmed that he is truly the Christ, God’s Son.
• Jesus authorized the twelve apostles to act on his behalf (“apostles” connoting being sent to act with the sender’s own authority).
• Jesus’ parables obscured the truth judgmentally from outsiders & clarified the truth rewardingly for insiders.
• Peter’s confession of Jesus’ messiahship exposed his & the other disciples’ expectation that Jesus would not suffer but rule as the Christ. Jesus rebuked Peter & corrected his understanding of messiahship by emphasizing that the Christ must undergo death & resurrection.
• The Transfiguration previewed Jesus’ future kingly glory.
• The Triumphal Entry occurred on Palm Sunday of Passion Week.
• The Olivet Discourse contains predictions of destruction of the temple, the abomination of desolation, the great tribulation, & the second coming.
• The Last Supper included Passover & institution of the Lord’s Supper.
• Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trials before the Sanhedrin & Pontius Pilate, crucifixion, & resurrection followed in quick succession.
• Extant endings beyond 16:8 are inauthentic.
Matthew
■ Authorship: Tradition favors the apostle Matthew.
■ Origin & Date: This Gospel probably originated in Antioch, Syria, whether before or after AD 70 being disputed.
■ Structure: Jesus’ genealogy & nativity are followed by mainly Marcan narrative interspersed with 5 discourses of Jesus.
■ Jewishness: Jesus is portrayed as Moses-like...
