Basic materials

You will find all sorts of different drawing media in your art materials shop, and although no one drawing medium is superior to any other, some are more popular than others, especially lead pencils, charcoal and contĆ© sticks, which have proved their versatility over the years. It is only by trial and error – or perhaps trial and success – that you will discover which medium suits you best.
A range of drawing and sketching materials are used throughout this book, some of which are traditional whereas others are more modern. There are many innovative materials now available, such as watersoluble pencils and art brush pens, which have a firm point at one end, just like a fibre-tip pen, and a softer, brush-like tip at the other end.
In addition, you can have fun experimenting with pastels, contƩ, coloured inks, watercolours and other media. The selection is varied enough for you to enjoy discovering a fascinating range of drawing and sketching possibilities.

Sketching materials can be simple and very lightweight. For the basics, all you need is a sketchbook and some pencils.

Suggested materials
Some popular drawing materials are:
image
• Lead pencils Start with grades HB (medium hard), 2B (soft) and 4B (very soft). Always buy good-quality (more expensive) pencils, since the better-quality pencils have the lead bonded to the wooden case to prevent the lead breaking if you drop them. It is most frustrating to try to sharpen a pencil only to discover that the lead is broken all the way to the bottom. Ask for advice at your local art materials shop if you are not sure which manufacturer’s products to choose.

• Charcoal sticks These are available in various sizes. It is probably best to buy a mixed box.
image
• Compressed charcoal in pencil form This is useful for more detailed work.
image
• ContĆ© This is available as both sticks and pencils.
image
• Pastel pencils These are thin sticks of hard pastel in pencil form.
image
• Coloured pencils These are clean and portable.
image
• Watersoluble coloured pencils The marks can be dissolved to give a watercolour wash effect.
image
• Art brush pens These are pens with a fine tip at one end and a brush at the other.
Here are some of the sketching implements used in this book, as listed above, together with the marks they make.
