Introduction
Do you want to have full energy, concentration and have all your resources at your disposal to accomplish any task?
Do you want to have a predictable way to regenerate your different energies so you can tackle the most difficult or challenging situations over and over, without burning out?
Most people are not aware of how our different systems i.e. emotions, physical, intellectual even spiritual all need to be stressed to their full potential and proactively regenerated.
Why we need to balance stress and recovery to fully maximize our potentials and enjoy life. We can’t just be pushing ourselves to our limits, working all the time, forgetting the need to recharge. Living life off just enjoyment without pushing ourselves? There is no growth! It leads to stagnation and utter boredom.
Those who take it too easy and coast through life like it was a vacation are not really living life to their full potential.
Those who just push themselves constantly not putting value to rest and relaxation are also suffering from the same condition- not maximizing themselves. They just don't recharge enough!
Sense of balance
The key to happiness and self actualization is balance! To utilize stress and be constantly pushing oneself to go beyond one's limits more and more, day by day until growth is achieved. This is no different from working out at the gym where we push our limits constantly and the body compensates by building on muscles to help with the increasing stress levels.
The problem there is if you just work out and you don't really feel good from the results? That will lead to burnout and lost sense of purpose. As you realize by now, many who get into these things may eventually burn out. One cause is that is they don't really see the point of doing it! They're doing it for shallow reasons or mere vanity.
But those who stay and manage to be REALLY into it, maybe committing their entire adult lives to it? See not just the shallow vanities but have deeper, underlying purpose aligned with their core values… It's not just working out and building muscles but in the accomplishment of a life ambition! Perhaps it is to maximize his physical potential? Perhaps health reasons? Perhaps increase his power and stamina to get good at his sport? Whatever it is, it must be strong enough to sustain long term interest in the field
Recharging one's battery
There is interdependence between the different systems. Between the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental energies, you must replenish all energies in the different systems to function at your peak. In doing so, you can push yourself even more and you'll be able to do even much more as a result.
Regenerations of energy determine the overall quality of our lives. You must draw from and deliberately recharge the different subdivisions of our personality. It affects our motivation and quality of life that we lead.
You must pursue to get enjoyment and replenish your stores of energy especially for the sole purpose of expanding your capacity. Pushing ourselves to our limits naturally expand our capacity and in order for that to happen we have to deliberate control how and which areas we need to push ourselves and the manner of recharging them. Most crucial for those who love to challenge themselves and push themselves to their absolute limits. This is not optional anymore because those reservoirs of energy get expended quickly. They become especially critical to face the next higher levels and added stresses from the challenges, which require more energy and vigor.
Dynamic Self Improvement
Continued improvement and any lasting change are only possible by clearly defining your purpose and aligning yourself to it! Not just forcing yourself to do it, but actually understanding the point why you do it, and being aligned with it. Once you clearly defined your purpose? Not just logically but really appreciate and subscribe to it? You can then pursue it with all your energies and focus!
Self Inventory
Facing the truth about who you are- both your strengths and limitations will allow you to accurately chart your direction, letting go of any self-delusions and measuring your progress (or lack of) objectively! Try to be honest. It’s better to face your flaws head on, than be in self denial. You can’t fix what you don’t admit to! Alternatively you also can’t do more of what’s been found to be working, unless you first recognize the successes!
Balance
Imbalance is pushing yourself too far without enough time for recovery. This results to decreased performance, breakdown of the machine even burnout!
Burnout happens when not enough reward mechanisms are put in place to get you going. If the challenge is balanced with recovery mechanisms? The stress overall does not get to you too much because it's properly rewarded.
Explained another way an act that is considered displeasurable becomes associated with pleasure so the person actually learns to look forward to, instead of fearing the activity or making it the last thing on his mind he would think about when it comes to pleasure.
Too much R&R
This happens when there is too much recovery or too much relaxation and not enough challenge that results to boredom even complacency! That lack of positive stress causes weakness because you're not being challenged enough, so you turn to Jell-O. Here, all you're doing is having fun wasting your time and potential when you could be doing something more worthwhile. So the ideal is to have a perfect balance between both challenge and recovery to keep you in tip top shape, mentally and emotionally stimulated WHILE having the means to recharge your physical, emotional and mental batteries.
Scientists and researchers have found that our bodies and minds are designed to work at our absolute peak, for a maximum of two hours only.
So rather than going through the work like it’s a marathon, working till exhaustion? It's better if instead we treat it as series of short distance sprints! We can get more work done and our focus is to the max if we let ourselves work at peak but always taking care of our requirements to take regular breaks-to recharge our batteries.
Do it every one to two hours taking a break 10-15 min each time. A break could mean drinking coffee or tea, playing with your dog, checking your e-mail or Facebook and other pleasurable distractions.
The typical work habit people generally do is work non-stop until exhaustion. Although it might seem like you are doing a lot of work by following that schedule? Performance scientists and researchers have determined that you are not being as productive as you would otherwise be if you took regular and scheduled breaks.
Rhythm
Practically anything in life has a given rhythm. Your body has a natural ebb and flow, force and counter forces regulating its movements and actions By knowing your biorhythms, you can exploit opportunities naturally occurring with your energies and motivation. You can exploit its natural rhythm to get things done while saving on extra energy for exertion.
When you are excited or inspired for example? You can ride that wave and get work done much more efficiently in areas related to that specific inspiration.
If you are feeling angry for example, you can engage in much more physical activities such as home carpentry, or any other activities requiring manual labor, perhaps even strenuous exercise that will allow you to ride those aggressive energies.
Doing so without the matching state, you'll be spending more energy than is necessary like trying to hammer nails, or lifting weights-activities that you already feel like doing anyways when in an angry state.
Such and many other emotions and energies occur to us naturally and by matching it with the right tasks? We fully utilize the energies that are already present.
Examples of renewals
Physical renewal is taking care of your body recharging process. Occasionally getting some massage or eating healthy, going on a short walk, gulping energy drinks, anything that gives you physical benefits.
Emotional renewal
Doing something you love and enjoy that gives you an emotional high. Listening to music, playing a computer game etc.
