This edition, based on Mozart's autograph manuscript and early German translations of the libretto, embodies both the original Italian libretto of Lorenzo Da Ponte and a new corrected version of the German text. BASIS OF THE EDITION

The present score is based on Mozart’s own manuscript, in the collection of the Prussian State Library in Berlin. Unfortunately this manuscript is not preserved in its entirety; it lacks the recitative “Dunque voi non aprite?” following the Trio No. 13, and the recitative “Tutto è disposto” preceding Figaro’s Aria No. 26, both replaced in the manuscript by a copyist’s work. Also missing are the recitative “Perfida, e in quella forma meco mentia” preceding the Finale No. 28, and the wind and brass parts of the same Finale from measure 335 to the end, which were written on an “extra sheet.” For editing these missing passages, especially the wind and brass parts, it was possible to consult a few old copies—principally the one in the Prince Fürstenberg Library in Donaueschingen—which helped clear up many doubts.
