The third edition of Essentials of Symbolic Logic is a concise and clearly written introduction to the topic. Based on years of use in colleges and universities, the book provides an accessible and thorough grounding in sentence logic and predicate logic. While technical jargon is kept to a minimum, all necessary logical concepts and vocabulary are explained clearly. A standard system of natural deduction is developed, and readers are given suggestions for developing strategies for creating derivations (proofs) in this system.

This
quotation
reflects
Locke's
belief
that
one
can
reason
logically
without
having
studied
the
subject
called
'logic'.
I
share
Locke's
view.
The
study
of
logic,
of
course,
is
far
different
now
from
what
it
was
in
Locke's
time;
the
student
of
today
is
likely
to
spend
much
more
time
on
symbolic
logic
than
on
the
logic
of
Aristotle.
Notwithstanding
the
great
differences
between
Aristotelian
logic
and
contemporary
symbolic
logic,
the
view
that
one
should
learn
logic
in
order
to
reason
properly
is
still
prevalent.
I
do
not
deny
that
the
study
of
logic
can
-
and
often
does
-
sharpen
one's
ability
to
reason;
what
I
deny
is
that
this
is
the
only,
or
even
the
primary,
reason
for
studying
the
subject.
