1.1 Introduction

A problem of finding the best possible solution from the set of feasible solutions is an optimization problem. Metaheuristic algorithms, which form a significant part of Artificial Intelligence (AI), have been used by the researchers to find optimal solutions to various problems in the engineering domain. During the activities like designing, constructing, or maintaining an engineering system, the engineers are required to take many scientific and management decisions. These decisions should result in maximizing the desired benefits. Optimization, in its broadest sense, can be applied to solve any engineering problem. Optimization in electrical engineering areas is crucial to support the complex task of efficiently generating, transmitting, distributing and utilizing electricity. The electrical transmission and distribution systems protection is one such area of power system where optimization is needed. Coordinating overcurrent relays in distribution system optimally, placing PMUs at substations optimally, estimating fault sections in distribution systems, and finding fault location on transmission lines are the optimization problems considered in this chapter.
Some of the applications in Electrical Engineering suitable for applying optimization techniques include:

  3. Unit commitment for thermal power plants [5]
  4. Load forecasting [6]
  5. Transmission expansion planning [7]

  10. Estimation of fault location on transmission lines [3745]
Researchers have applied various conventional as well as AI-based techniques as a means of effectively dealing with these optimization problems. This chapter discusses various research problems [(7) to (10) in the list above] in the area of electrical transmission and distribution systems protection. Each problem will be defined briefly, highlighting its significance. The problem definition will be followed by the mathematical formulation of the problem, its illustration, and various researchers’ methodologies to solve it.
