Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine, it is the fifth book of the Sherlock Holmes canon, and the third of the four full length novels (the rest being short story collections).It is one of the most famous books ever written and was inspired by the legend of Brook Hall (situated in a parish in Devon) and Squire Richard Cabell, a man who, it is rumoured, sold his soul to the devil. Furthermore, Devon has folklore that includes a supernatural dog (the Yeth hound), which may also have inspired Doyle. The novel is set on Dartmoor in the West Country of Devon and tells the story of a murder.Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead near his manor - his face frozen in an expression of horrorand the footprints of a massive dog nearby. Legend has it that during the time of the English Civil War, Hugo Baskerville abducted a young girl and caused her death on the moor, and was in return, killed by a huge demonic dog. Since then, this hound has been haunting the manor.
