In
Figure
1.1
we
provide
an
integrated
model
of
substance
use
and
abuse
that
aims
to
capture
the
relationships
between
the
different
levels
of
analysis
that
are
relevant
for
our
understanding
of
substance
use
issues
(see
Thakker
&
Durrant,
2001;
Thakker,
Ward,
&
Strongman,
1999,
for
the
use
of
this
model
in
a
broader
mental
health
context).
The
design
of
Figure
1.1
is
straightforward;
this
model
is
best
viewed
as
a
way
of
conceptualizing
different
approaches
to
substance
use
and
abuse
rather
than
an
explanatory
framework
in
its
own
right.
It
is
thus
a
"meta-model":
a
way
of
visualizing
the
relationships
among
the
dif-
ferent
levels
of
analysis
that
have
been
employed
in
other
explanatory
frameworks.
This
model
has
four
components:
biological
variables,
psycho-
social
variables,
cultural-historical
variables,
and
the
self.
