1. Abstract, concrete and proper nouns (FGU sections 1.1.1, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4)

The aim of the exercises in this section is to ensure that you know what nouns are, and that you are able to recognise different types of noun.

(a) Fill in the blanks and find the nouns

Read the passage below right through once and then:
  1. Complete the seven incomplete abstract nouns (e.g. d’un cur___ → d'un cursus)
  2. Find the abstract nouns (e.g. le savoir, la beauté) that have been turned into these anagrams: orumfle; estremes; tomnant; oticcloano
  3. Find two concrete nouns referring to possible accommodation (e.g. un appartement, une villa) in specific cities mentioned in the text
  4. Find a noun which has an abstract meaning in the text but can have a concrete meaning elsewhere, both in the context of money (e.g. une addition meaning a sum versus meaning the cost of a meal in a restaurant)
  5. Find four examples each of proper nouns (e.g. Pierre, Paris)
  6. Find two different compound nouns of the type ‘noun + de + noun’, both plural and both corresponding to the English word ‘fees’
  7. Find the only noun in the text which changes form when it refers to males or to females (e.g. un candidat, une candidate) and give the form that is not in the text

to pay one's (university) fees ________________________

a grant obtained without means-testing ________________________
to study in two institutions simultaneously ________________________

2. Use of articles with nouns describing a general class, unique phenomenon or abstract quality (FGU sections 1.1.1, 2.2 and 2.3)

Nouns describing a general class, unique phenomenon or abstract quality are usually accompanied by a definite article (le, la, les), unless they refer to a specific example of the quality in question, when an indefinite article (un, une, des) is used: Le silence est d’or ‘Silence is golden’, but Il s’est produit un silence absolu ‘Absolute silence ensued.’
Translate the English phrases in the following sentences into French, making any other adjustments that might be necessary (e.g. changing de to d’).
  • e.g. DĂšs la fin de la guerre, la diffusion de _________ (television) dĂ©marre de façon foudroyante
  • DĂšs la fin de la guerre, la diffusion de la tĂ©lĂ©vision dĂ©marre de façon foudroyante
