Chapter 8
The Duplication of Judas and the Antichrist
One of the most sordid and despicable acts ever recorded in Scripture and in history was the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. Through history, there have been many acts of betrayal.
  1. Brutus and Julius Caesar. Marcus Junius Brutus was a Roman senator who helped assassinate Julius Caesar, and Julius Caesar responded, “Et tu Brutus,” meaning “and you, Brutus.”
  2. Benedict Arnold was an American general who betrayed the American Continental Army to the British.
  3. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg betrayed America by passing atomic bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. Both were hanged for this despicable deed.
Judas was a man blessed by Jesus, who ate out of the same dish, who fellowshipped together, perhaps laughed together, and who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
There are certain things recorded in the Scripture that are difficult to understand, and one of those things was why did Jesus choose Judas knowing he was a thief. Judas kept the bag, meaning he was the treasurer of the disciples. And yet Jesus, knowing this, allowed Judas to betray him. What caused Judas to make this decision? It was his greed.
After making the agreement to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, Judas led the multitude to where Jesus was praying.
And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let is be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. (Matthew 26:44–49)
Judas tells the multitude, “I will give you a sign. The person I will kiss is the Christ.”
Despite this wicked perfidious deed, compassionate Jesus calls Judas “friend.”
The next day, Judas came under such conviction, and so remorseful of that wicked deed, he returned the blood money to the high priests.
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said. What is that to us? See thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. (Matthew 27:3–5)
Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. (Acts 1:18)
Matthew 27:5 tells us that Judas hung himself, and Acts 1:18 tells us he fell headlong. Obviously, the rope he used couldn’t bear his weight or perhaps it was badly frayed, the rope broke, and Judas falls headfirst and dies of a head wound.
That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. (Acts 1:25)
This verse tells us that the disciples are now choosing another man to take the place of Judas, and then we are told that Judas went to his own place. God had a place specifically prepared for Judas, which is quite interesting as we shall soon see why.
Now over the hundreds of years, there has been much speculation as to who the Antichrist is, and many have wondered if he is alive right now.
We believe God’s Word has the answer to those questions as we consider the duplication of Judas and the Antichrist.
  1. a. Judas was a disciple of Jesus.
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach. (Mark 3:14)
And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into a house. (Mark 3:19)
Here the Lord Jesus selects twelve men as his disciples, and one of those men was the betrayer, Judas Iscariot. Every time Judas is mentioned in Scripture, his act of betrayal is mentioned, and in fact, there are forty verses n the Scripture that tell of his betrayal.
  1. The Antichrist is a disciple of Satan.
And the beast, which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. (Revelation 13:2)
The Antichrist is described as a leopard, the feet of a bear, and the mouth of a lion. This depicts his savage and ferocious person. A leopard is pound for pound one of the strongest cats. They can carry their prey and climb trees with them. The feet of a bear has sharp claws that can climb trees. The mouth of a lion can rip through meat and bones with ease with teeth that are almost four inches in length.
What an awful description portrayed about the Antichrist.
  1. a. Jesus gave Judas power to perform miracles.
And he called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. (Matthew 10:1, 4)
After Jesus selects twelve me...
