A LETTER FROM BERLIN
Ben Vautier 3, Kalckreuthstrasse Berlin 30/1000
Hello
this is my fourth letter, for I had the time to write the other three ones. This one less - I know now my way around, where to eat, where to dance, where to swim, meet people, etc. So why stay at home writing letters. Today it is really too cold to go out, so here I am.
This letter is mostly about my Berlin life. Annie said stop wasting your time on unimportant things -what about the importance of non-importance - Next time I will theorize - But please keep in mind - I make mistakes this is nat. The observer or the Monde just Ben Talking.
ABOUT CULTURE
Travelling I got the feeling and Berlin atmosphere underlines it (no, I never told you to underline atmosphere) that we artists, critics art public, art today, bathing in a thick cultural soup and the more we try to get out of it, with anti-art, new art, life art, etc. the more soup we are pouring into the soup. I even wonder if the rough punks and rockers are in it with us or not. Thinking it over the Paris Berlin show at Beaubourg has something else missing, no representation of young Berlin creative spirit and too much history. I am not even speaking of the realists and the Vostells but the very young generation the Pitz and Kummer group.
It was an anarchist place in spirit, the freest in the world — a restaurant where every night clients will break everything and start again next day — real atmosphere — that was Fofis restaurant on Savignyplatz Friday I went to Fofis on Fasanenstr. (« You see the first two years I hated Berlin but I was in love so I stayed and built my world to protect myself ») That was Fofis speaking, Dorothy added and thinking that the cultural people never knew about all that was happening.
Harold Szeeman is still today the only curator who took risks for creation and novelty.
Scribbled notes
I don't know how to wash my clothes I wash them because they stink but they stink even more afterwards so I take them to the cleaner after having them washed
- I have an idea why not
wrap Christo up and show him in the Reichstag admittance free 5 marks for culture - Berlin I don't like you
I decided not to drink anymore
and I am drinking even more
- I saw a girl kiss
a boy
at the pizzeria
there were tears in her eyes
- Berlin would not like you who had ruined church of yours with its broken parts restored by Gaudi in crystal glass
- I came over with fifteen pullovers
(my mother is a pullover maniac)
all colors all forms
but I always wear the same one
because of its neckline.
- Saturday I had Saturday night fever I went dancing at the Metropole
After three o'clock the dance floor got really hot
We were a bunch smiling laughing dancing inventing disco
Nobody knew each other
I enjoyed it — went back home soaked
I lost at least a kilo
P.S. - Could I get a free entrance for my press appreciations
- I have just discovered Henry Miller
I have read him before
but missed the point
I was then only looking for cunts in a hurry
Taking my time now
- Werner Sollors new proprietor dropped in and
brought me
des pruneaux d'Agen à l'armagnac (armagnac prunes)
— a Berliner artist told me the DAAD works too much if not only to give an image of itself, they are not very really interested in creation happening
ABOUT MYSELF
From the 1st to the 7th of February
I will be in Marrakech
in the sun swimming
at the Club Méditerranée
I am invited to speak about Berlin and art
I shall wear a white silk Humphrey Bogart suit
and a Panama hat with light blue sun glasses
I shall send you postcards
In April I am participating in the "Freie Berliner Kunst-Ausstellung" with Doroty and Endre Tòt
a show which gives a feeling we are part of everybody
since everybody can show
Since I have not heard of a price being attributed
(if there was one I would like to get it)
I shall myself discern the:
LE GRAND PRIX DE LA CREATION 1979
to the most creative group and the most creative
artist in that group of cause will not judge the
group which I am in - the Price will be...
(I have not yet decided)
I like women
I like their eyes
I like them when they smile
I like touching them
I like their legs
I like bodies when they move
I like men too
— I like in the snow on my face on the Ku'damm Street
My hat and my gloves are lying one meter away. The people stop to stare and gather around
The police come
I get up and say it was only a realistic expressionist German performance for culture
When I went back to Nice for my Christmas holidays
my wife looked at me and said
— Mais tu as gonflé.
(you have blown up)
— That is the German beer and the Spaghetti Bolognese
— Anybody who will write on the wall of Berlin (not the Wall) where people pass (under their own responsibility): I like Ben, or, I hate Ben, or, Ben go home, or Ben ist der Größte, I will give in exchange a small work of art.
ABOUT OTHERS
Saw Kolàr for the first time at DAAD reception
Kolàr looks like a Czech official or a school inspector on tour. His work is good. But not as good as some say
The importance of east European artists is difficult to evaluate because of a certain aura of east Europe they bring with them and which becomes an exterior factor who intervenes in the judgment of their work.
• — Doroty Iannone has trouble with her car, Dagmar Franke has trouble with her car, and I have trouble with my car.
