Towards Autonomy in Translation has been tailored to suit the needs of students at a proficiency level of English preparing for the 4th year English language examination which forms part of the Italian Universiry Corso di Laurea in Lingua e Letteratura Inglese (Facoltà di Letttere e Filosofia). In addition, students working at an equivalent level in Language Schools or those involved in translation training and associated studies will find this book particularly relevant to their requirements. It also lends itself as a useful resource book for those wishing to carry out post-graduate research in this area. Like its less advanced companion volume Targets in Translation, it is divided into 20 separate study units, each of which deals with the translation from Italian into English of an authentic annotated prose passage. The 20 translation passages have been selected as being rapresentative of the richness and variety of Italian 20th-century writing. The passages chosen are, however, of a more challenging nature and present more intricate narratological and syntactical problems. The same practical approach has been continued throughout. Students are guided through the notoriously insidious forest of translation by means of: clear indications as to how to avoid the most common snares and pitfalls involved in the translation process with detailed explanations and exemplification; useful suggestions as to how to achieve an appropriate and successful rendering from the formal as well as form the functional point of view. The inclusion of "model" English versions in the Appendix makes the book suitable non only for use in the classroom, where the material can be exploited for further work and discussion, but also for students working autonomously.
