La vanità e le debolezze della vita di provincia fanno da sfondo a un delle più belle storie d'amore della letteratura. Pubblicato a Londra, da T. Egerton, nel 1813 In provincia non succede mai molto, e l'arrivo di due scapoli giovani e benestanti è un avvenimento. Specialmente in una casa con ragazze in età da marito e di scarsi mezzi, come sono le cinque sorelle Bennet. Eppure, fin dal primo incontro, tra la vivace Elizabeth e lo scostante Darcy scatta una cordiale antipatia; quando la ragazza scopre che lui trama contro la liaison tra l'amata sorella Jane e l'amico Bingley, l'avversione si fa ancora più forte. Ma gli eventi sgretoleranno il pregiudizio di Elizabeth, e anche Darcy, nonostante il suo orgoglio aristocratico, si scoprirà perdutamente innamorato. Nel suo capolavoro, Jane Austen tratteggia con affetto e brio la vita provinciale che conosceva così bene, e i suoi personaggi deliziosi animano una commedia di costume tra le più amate della letteratura inglese.

Chapman, Oxford 1923-54, con commenti e illustrazioni; revisionata da Mary Lascelles, 1965-67 e di cui esiste una versione recente del 1980.
