È stato uno tra gli scrittori piú originali degli Stati Uniti, la penna piú folle e coraggiosa degli ultimi decenni. Non solo autore di grandi opere narrative, ma anche - come in questo libro - osservatore finissimo, dotato di uno sguardo totale, capace di attraversare un continente e restituirne ogni dettaglio, voce, piega di dolore e significato. Raccontare l'11 settembre o l'ascesa della tennista Tracy Austin, analizzare l'ironia di Kafka o riflettere sul tragico destino delle aragoste, recarsi agli Oscar del cinema porno o unirsi alla carovana mediatica di un avversario di Bush nelle primarie repubblicane: in questi scritti che vanno dal reportage all'indagine colta, dal pezzo di costume al diario intimo, Wallace ascolta la voce profonda dell'America e la traduce in letteratura. L'ennesimo capolavoro di un geniale pittore dell'ipermoderno e della cultura pop.

Avvertenza della traduttrice a Autorità e uso della lingua.

Il seguente saggio si concentra sull’uso dell’inglese e presenta esempi di espressioni specifiche di tale lingua, con una casistica di forme del parlato che esulano dal cosiddetto Inglese scritto standard.

La traduttrice non tenterà il gesto suicida e ipocrita di tradurle tutte, per un problema principalmente di logica e coerenza del testo: se si sta parlando della lingua inglese nei suoi dettagli grammaticali e semantici sarebbe illogico tradurre con un corrispettivo italiano (per es.: se l’autore parla dell’uso di «he don’t» invece di «he doesn’t», sarebbe illogico e disonesto da parte mia tradurre con uno pseudoanalogo italiano come, per dire, «lui c’ha» invece di «lui ha»). La traduttrice tiene altresí a rassicurare il lettore della logicità, invece, del tradurre il presente saggio, e della sua assoluta rilevanza per una riflessione sulla lingua italiana

La prima pagina dunque, comprendente titolo del capitolo, elencazione di strafalcioni, errori grammaticali e semantici piú o meno gravi, o semplici brutture linguistiche proprie della lingua inglese, non viene tradotta ed è proposta in originale, anche se in italiano si potrebbero trovare miriadi di esempi analoghi – e sarà forse interessante notare che molti dei nostri strafalcioni vengono da calchi sull’inglese (Intrigante per affascinante. Eccitante per emozionante. Alzarsi in piedi. Camminare a piedi. Procedere avanti. Cercare di trovare. Te come soggetto. Battere gli occhi. Essere interessato in qualcosa. Siccome che. Essere davanti della casa. Qual’è. L’utilizzo sconsiderato e manieroso degli avverbi che finiscono in -mente. Mantenersi a per attenersi a. Particolare. Dice che. Minimale per minimo. Carinissimo. Attimino).

Sembra importante inoltre armare il lettore di una microlegenda con alcune regole grammaticali inglesi che non hanno corrispettivo in italiano e che vengono menzionate da Wallace. L’«infinito spezzato»: quando fra il «to» e il verbo all’infinito viene interposto un avverbio; il «participio sospeso»: quando il soggetto del participio non corrisponde al soggetto della frase principale cui si appoggia; gli «aggettivi frasali»: quando una frase intera o piú parole unite hanno funzione di aggettivo (pur non essendo aggettivi), e in questo caso la grammatica inglese richiede che esse siano unite fra loro con un trattino (e qui si aprirebbe un discorso assai interessante su come tradurli, allora, visto che quei trattini in inglese rispondono a una regola ben precisa, mentre in italiano grammaticalmente non vogliono dire nulla; il problema è che in moltissimi casi questi aggettivi frasali – specie nelle loro forme piú lunghe – diventano una questione di stile. Nei presenti saggi quindi troverete alcuni aggettivi frasali uniti con trattini anche in italiano, e il ragionamento alla base di tale scelta è stato privilegiare la logica dello stile rispetto alla logica della grammatica, secondo la quale in italiano quegli aggettivi andrebbero sciolti e amalgamati uniformemente nel testo). Irregardless e heighth sono grafie non convenzionali rispettivamente di regardless (= incurante; con of = nonostante, a prescindere da) e height (= altezza).

Infine, per chi dopo la lettura fosse ancora curioso, e vista la difficoltà (o quantomeno lentezza) di reperire il testo di Garner in Italia, rimandiamo a uno stralcio di Garner’s Modern American Usage del 2003 disponibile su Internet all’indirizzo <http://www.us.oup.com/pdf/0195161912_combined.pdf>, di particolare interesse sia perché vi si può leggere l’introduzione alla prima edizione di cui parla Wallace, sia perché presenta un saggio di Garner, dal titolo Making Peace in the Language Wars, che in qualche modo risponde a questo di Wallace.
