The undisputed heir to the 15th century comic tradition, Francesco Berni (1497-1535) was the most important burlesque poet of the 16th century, in a decisive period for Italian history and culture. To him we owe the invention of a style, soon imitated and called 'bernesco', that would have repercussions on comic poetry until the 18th century. This volume, which welcomes the voices of some of the most authoritative scholars of burlesque rhyme, represents an up-to-date assessment of Berni and his epigones, and at the same time offers the reader new interpretations of the texts, with previously unpublished and significant moments in the fortunes of Bernian poetry in Italy and Europe.
