Found in 1923 along the Po River, the Alberone hoard represents a crucial archaeological and historical benchmark for understanding monetary circulation within the Renaissance Duchy of Ferrara. Preserved at the Schifanoia Museum, this key complex comprises roughly one thousand coins in gold, silver, and billon spanning over two centuries of minting. Gulinelli provides a rigorous cataloging and analytical assessment of the collection, illuminating the economic dynamics of North-Central Italy between the 15th and 16th centuries. The study details the regional coin market where local Estense issues coexisted with major Italian currencies—most notably Venice, Mantova, and Milan—as well as international gold coins like the Hungarian ducat. By contextualizing the hoard against official Estense monetary decrees (gride), the publication reconstructs the practical exchange systems, silver-to-gold balances, and state-level responses to counterfeiting and currency depreciation during the Italian Renaissance.
