Choosing a hotel

Considering that Hawaii attracts travelers of every kind, the islands abound in accommodations of every persuasion. Resorts, hotels, inns, rental condominiums, bed-and-breakfasts, hostels, and campsites – the islands have them all.

Because there are so many different classifications of accommodations in Hawaii, the quality of these accommodations varies widely. Many of the international luxury hotel chains have built brands around a certain standard of excellence; if you can afford these properties (often at upward of $500 per night), you probably know what you’re looking for. On the flipside, the quality of rooms at properties on the lower end of the scale can vary widely. Definitely do your research (both here and online, at property websites) before you book.

Prices fluctuate considerably in Hawaii; they are most commonly dictated by season and location. During rainy season, for instance, especially in resort areas such as Wailea on Maui, some of the highest-end rooms might be $200–$300 less than they are during high season (which is summer). Location also determines price; the closer you are to a “beachfront” location, the more expensive your nightly rate likely will be. When you are ready to book, note that most accommodations offer booking online (at their respective websites). All of them also take reservations by phone. Some even can be booked through local companies in Hawaii that handle reservations for certain types of lodging. Finally, it may pay to book your rooms through an online travel agent such as Expedia, where bundling a room with airfare and rental car could save you big bucks.

One last note. If you are particular about the exact location of your accommodation, you should either confirm the location with the property or call the reservations company. Because towns in Hawaii are so spread-out, mailing addresses sometimes don’t reflect the true location of a hotel or condominium. Lahaina, for example, is often the mailing post office for places across West Maui. The same is true on Molokai and Lanai, where one postal code covers each of the islands, respectively.
