AI-powered Research Assistant End User Licence

Version number 1.0 of the 30th September, 2024

End User Licence Details

This end user licence (the “Licence”) sets out the licence under which you, the end user, can use Perlego’s AI-powered Research Assistant feature (the “feature”). Any use that is not strictly in compliance with the provisions of this Licence is prohibited.

We may amend the details of this Licence from time to time at our absolute discretion.

Artificial intelligence

While our AI-powered Research Assistant feature responds to natural language queries and provides responses that may be indistinguishable from those that a human might create, when interacting with the feature, users are interacting with an artificial intelligence system, not a human. If for any reason you do not wish to interact with an AI system (or are prohibited from doing so), you should not use the feature.

Use and ownership

We are giving you limited permission to use the AI-powered Research Assistant feature for personal and academic purposes only. You do not gain any other rights in the feature or its underlying technology. You may not use the feature for any other purpose. Other than as expressly permitted by this Licence, you cannot make any use (including copying or sharing) of the outputs of the feature.

You may not make any use of the feature that infringes the legal rights of any person, or is in breach of any applicable law.

To the extent that any intellectual property rights arise in the outputs of the feature, these are or remain the intellectual property of Perlego and/or its licensors. You do not own the results of any outputs from the feature.

If you cite, disseminate, share, copy or otherwise use any outputs of the feature as permitted by this licence, you must attribute the results to the Perlego AI-powered Research Assistant.

Your queries

To the extent that any intellectual property rights arise in the queries you input into the feature, we do not make any claim to own these. We do not train AI models on your queries.

The feature is intended for use to process natural language queries, search Perlego’s licensed publications, and provide responses to those queries based on the content of the publications, with references.

When querying the feature, you must not:

  • provide any information relating to identifiable living human beings (personal data);
  • provide any information which is confidential, proprietary or the intellectual property of any other person;
  • use the feature for any purpose other than personal or academic;
  • interact in any way that is not in compliance with all applicable civil and criminal law;
  • seek to gain information on how to, or seek to, cause any harm to or infringe the legal rights of any person (including yourself);
  • attempt to bypass any limits, guardrails or other safety or ethics features;
  • attempt to hack, crash, reverse-engineer or gain any unauthorised access or impair its functionality in any way.
  • attempt to influence, manipulate, or circumvent the intended operation of the feature, including through techniques such as prompt injections, designed to bypass or alter any embedded instructions, guardrails, or ethical frameworks in order to generate unintended outputs.

In addition to the terms set out in the License, you agree to comply with Microsoft Generative AI Services Code of Conduct when using this feature. Any violation of Microsoft's Code of Conduct may result in termination of your access to the feature, reporting of the violation to relevant authorities, or legal action if required.

We may collect data relating to queries, including how often different publications are referenced in responses to user queries, to develop and improve our services and comply with our obligations to our licensors. We may also collect information on how the feature is used to comply with legal obligations relating to AI governance. Any data we process will either be anonymised and aggregated, or as set out in our Privacy Policy.

Each query is discrete and the feature does not “remember” details of previous queries when responding. Users cannot view the details or history of queries submitted by other users. Other than as set out above we do not store or retain details of queries or user sessions.

Feature output

AI models are not infallible. The feature provides output based on the content of Perlego’s licensed publications (which like any other document may contain inaccuracies, errors, or content that is not compatible with scientific consensus or current norms).

Use of the feature should be just one part of a rigorous academic enquiry. The feature provides reference links to Perlego’s licensed publications to support the statements it makes. These should be checked to confirm they accurately represent the text in question.

The feature is intended to support and enhance, not replace, academic work. You must not present the output of the feature as your own original work. You must not use the feature in any way which could represent a breach of the rules of any applicable academic institution or examining body. If you do reproduce output of the feature in a way that is permitted by this Licence, you must properly attribute it.

Other terms

This Licence supplements and does not replace other terms which may govern your relationship with Perlego or your use of our services, and should be read in conjunction with them.
