Dieses Studienbuch stellt zum einen die wichtigsten historischen Umbrüche der deutschen Sprache bis in die heutige Zeit dar, zum anderen und vor allem aber auch deren Begründung, und theoretische Fundierung und typologische Einordnung. Es wird daher zentral darum gehen, Warum-Fragen zu diskutieren stellen und zu beantworten. So hat sich das Deutsche im Laufe seiner Geschichte von einer "Silben"- zu einer ausgeprägten "Wortsprache" entwickelt, was sich auf mehreren Ebenen (z.B. Phonologie, Orthographie, Morphologie) niederschlägt. In der Syntax wird auf das Klammerprinzip abgehoben. Diesenm übergreifenden Prinzip und einigen weiteren Prinzipien gehen die Autorinnen anhand zahlreicher Beispiele nach und ermöglichen so ein tieferes Verständnis der deutschen Sprachgeschichte.
