Erst spät entwickelte sich die Idee einer staatlichen Einheit, parallel mit dem Verfall der feudalen Strukturen und dem Aufstieg des Bürgertums, zu einer politischen Vorstellung und Forderung. Und erst in den Jahren zwischen der Französischen Revolution und dem Wiener Kongress erhielt das Konzept der Nation in Deutschland seine moderne Bedeutung. Die Übersetzung spielt in diesem Prozess eine besondere Rolle.
