Das Buch gibt Studierenden des Spanischen ein zugängliches Grundlagenwerk zur Lautlehre ihres Studienfachs an die Hand, in dem bewährtes Basiswissen (zu dem auch der Umgang mit der sprach - analysesoftware Praat gehört) mit neueren Theorieentwicklungen (u.a. Merkmalsgeometrie, Autosegmentale Phonologie und Optimalitätstheorie sowie im Bereich der Prosodie das Autosegmental-MetrischeModell der Intonationsforschung und verschiedene Analyseverfahren zum Sprachrhythmus) verknüpft wird.Spanisch wird dabei nicht als homogene Sprache aufgefasst, sondern der europäische Standard (kastilische Normaussprache) wird gleichberechtigt mit anderen Varietäten (v. a. aus Lateinamerika) behandelt. Den romanischen Hintergrund bilden die nachbarsprachen Portugiesisch und Katalanisch, aber auch französisch und Italienisch werden vergleichend herangezogen, während als Kontrastfolie das Deutsche dient. Auf diese Weise ergeben sich vielfältige varietätenlinguistische und sprachvergleichende Einblicke in die lautliche Struktur und Entwicklung des Spanischen.
