Seine Werke reflektieren die Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkrieges, seine Rolle im Saarkampf, seine Zeit als Kommissar der Internationalen Brigaden im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg, die Jahre des Exils in Frankreich und in Mexiko und schließlich die Anfänge einer europäischen Nachkriegsordnung im Schatten des Kalten Krieges. Aber nicht nur als Zeuge der epochalen Umstürze des 20. Jahrhunderts ist Regler ein bemerkenswerter Autor. Im Spannungsfeld von Realismus und Neoromantik, Neuer Sachlichkeit und den Avantgarden seiner Generation hat er zu einer ganz eigenen Form einer littérature engagée gefunden.Die Studien des Bandes beleuchten in jeweils einzelnen Ansätzen biographische wie autobiographische Fragestellungen und bieten neben Deutungen und Analysen seiner Dichtungen auch ideen- und motivgeschichtliche Kommentare.
