Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes gehen aus dem internationalen Forschungsprojekt "Postimperiale Narrative in den zentraleuropäischen Literaturen der Moderne" hervor. Sie beschäftigen sich multiperspektivisch mit den sich literarisch, kulturell und politisch manifestierenden (post-)imperialen Narrativen in Zentraleuropa. Der Fokus liegt auf der Habsburger Monarchie in den letzten beiden Jahrhunderten ihrer Existenz, d.h. auf den mit dem Einbruch der Moderne eingeleiteten Prozessen der Nationalintegration und den Auflösungstendenzen übernationaler Staatsgebilde. Das Imperium wird im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts als ein übernationaler Raum von erweiterten Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten verstanden, in dem oft divergierende Narrative und Erzählstrategien entstehen, die sich in veränderter Form bis in unsere Gegenwart perpetuieren. In den Vordergrund wird das Widerspiel der kulturellen Konzepte zwischen übernationalen und einzelnen nationalen Sphären wie auch zwischen den nationalen Sphären untereinander gestellt. In diesem Zusammenhang beleuchtet der Band Berührungspunkte im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Nachfolgestaaten und Konstruktionsprinzipien gemeinsamer kultureller Strukturen in Zentraleuropa.
