Dieses Arbeitsbuch führt in den Gebrauch des Internationalen Phonetischen Alphabets (IPA) zur Transkription des Deutschen ein. Hierzu werden zunächst Kenntnisse zu standardsprachlichen Ausspracheregeln und stilistischer Variation innerhalb der Standardaussprache vermittelt. Im zweiten Teil geht es um die Problematik der engen Transkription, die am Beispiel standardsprachlicher Nachrichten und Gespräche sowie regionaler umgangssprachlicher Äußerungen demonstriert wird. Dabei gehen die Autoren auch auf das Varietätengefüge des Deutschen und einige exemplarisch ausgewählte Umgangssprachen ein. Das Lehrbuch dient somit der Aneignung des IPA sowie der Einführung in die Varietätenproblematik und versucht auf diese Weise, Verbindungen zwischen traditioneller Phonetik und Varietätenlinguistik aufzuzeigen.
