Das Buch fokussiert das Thema Sprache als Herausforderung in allen Fächern und versucht Wege zu zeigen, wie das fachliche und sprachliche Lernen in jedem Unterricht miteinander effektiv verknüpft werden können. Es bietet einen Überblick über den aktuellen Forschungsstand im Bereich Deutsch als Zweitsprache und sprachliche Förderung, führt in die Grundbegriffe und didaktisch-methodische Ansätze des sprachsensiblen Unterrichts ein. Dabei wird insbesondere die Perspektive von Schülern berücksichtigt, die über geringe Deutschkenntnisse verfügen und/ oder Deutsch als Zweitsprache sprechen. Behandelt werden neben diagnostischen Fragen u.a. der Sprachbedarf aus fachsprachlicher Sicht, die Auswahl der Lehrmaterialien bis hin zum Ablauf einer sprachsensiblen Unterrichtseinheit. Die für einen sprachsensiblen Unterricht relevanten Kompetenzen werden auf solche Art und Weise vermittelt, dass Pädagogen aus jedem Fachbereich diese nachvollziehen und anwenden können: Übungen mit Perspektivwechsel und zahlreiche Beispiele sensibilisieren angehende Lehrkräfte aller Fächer, Anwärter und Lehrkräfte im Dienst auf die sprachlichen Herausforderungen im eigenen Fachunterricht.
