Auf einen Einblick in die Verortung und die Geschichte der Varietätenlinguistik folgt eine Darstellung unterschiedlicher Varietätenmodelle und verschiedener Methoden der Analyse der diasystematischen Variation. In weiteren Kapiteln werden unter Bezug auf varietätenlinguistische Untersuchungen und anhand von zahlreichen Daten und Beispielen aus verschiedenen Sprachen und Varietäten wesentliche Termini und Kategorien, theoretische Ansätze, Probleme und Lösungsansätze betrachtet. Eigene Kapitel sind der Auseinandersetzung mit varietätenlinguistischen Fragestellungen u. a. in der Übersetzungswissenschaft und der Fremdsprachendidaktik gewidmet. Die Kapitel werden jeweils durch vielfältige Arbeitsaufgaben zum Selbststudium und bibliografische Hinweise abgerundet.
