Die islĂ€ndische Literatur hat heute eine zentrale Funktion fĂŒr die IdentitĂ€tsstiftung, der Beginn dieses IdentitĂ€tdiskurses ist bisher jedoch ungeklĂ€rt. Diese Frage greift der Band auf und diskutiert mit dem Blick auf die Literaturproduktion von 1100-1300 mithilfe kulturwissenschaftlicher GedĂ€chtnistheorien die Rolle der Schrift, Erinnerungstechniken und -strategien. Diese zeigen, dass Vergangenheit in Island kontrĂ€r erinnert wurde und nur ein geringer Bestand an kollektiven Erinnerungen existierte. Kompensiert wurde dieses Desiderat durch die Königssagas, innerhalb derer ein IdentitĂ€tsdiskurs entwickelt wurde, der Erinnerungskonkurrenzen dialogisch aushandelte. Durch diese Kontrolle ĂŒber die Historiographie gelang es den IslĂ€ndern, ihre bedrohte kollektive IdentitĂ€t zu erhalten. Die Entwicklung der Literatur ab 1100 geht daher mit der Aufforderung zu einem unaufhörlichen Erinnern einher, die das kulturelle GedĂ€chtnis der IslĂ€nder stets in sich trug.Dr. Laura Sonja Wamhoff promovierte und lehrte an der Christian-Albrechts-UniversitĂ€t zu Kiel.
