Die Studie untersucht die besondere Ästhetik mittelalterlicher Literatur am Beispiel verschiedener höfischer Romane des 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts. In einer theoretischen Vorüberlegung wird zuerst die Annahme der Nähe vormoderner Literatur zum Mythos zurückgewiesen. An ihre Stelle tritt die Einsicht in eine Form literarischer Sinnbildung, die sich über die Kategorien der Künstlichkeit und des Themas definiert. Exemplarische Analysen des Erec Hartmanns von Aue, der Tristanromane Eilharts von Oberg und Gottfrieds von Straßburg sowie des Willehalm von Orlens Rudolfs von Ems weisen das Verfahren dieser Sinnbildung detailliert auf und machen seine Bedeutung für die Poetik der Gattung deutlich. In Seitenblicken auf die selbstreflexiven Passagen der Romane wird zudem ein Bezug zum poetologischen Diskurs der Zeit hergestellt, der zeigt, wie sich das Kunstprinzip des romanhaften Erzählens schon beim mittelalterlichen Leser mit dem Eindruck des Künstlichen verband.
