Die Untersuchung, die sowohl die Methoden der Kirchen- und Sozialgeschichte als auch der Verbandsgeschichte einbezieht, stellt drei Charakteristika für das Wirken dieses großen kirchlichen Wohlfahrtsverbandes heraus: die Wahrung der konfessionellen Identität, die Entwicklung wissenschaftlicher Methoden (Caritaswissenschaft) und den Aufbau einer effizienten Organisation.Die Autorin beschreibt die Jahre der langwierigen Etablierung des Verbandes vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg und macht deutlich, wie sehr die Zeit der Weimarer Republik für seine Verwurzelung im dualen System der deutschen Wohlfahrtspflege entscheidend war. Das Buch zeigt somit einige der Voraussetzungen für das Überleben des Verbandes während des Dritten Reiches und trägt zum Verständnis seiner wichtigsten, auch heute noch geltenden Grundorientierungen bei.
