Hier steht üblicherweise das Editorial. Dies ist kein Editorial. Das Editorial hat etwas Zentralistisches, es ist eine Textsorte, die so tut, als kontrolliere sie den Rest des Kursbuchs – auch wenn alle Welt weiß, dass es erst geschrieben wird, wenn es nichts mehr zu kontrollieren gibt, also zum Schluss, damit es am Anfang stehen kann. Ein Editorial entspricht der Ästhetik des Städtischen, widerspricht aber der Praxis des Städtischen. Auch Städte sehen ästhetisch oft so aus, als hätten sie ein Editorial – eine erzählbare Geschichte, einen Namen mit Legende, ein Zentrum mit Prunk oder ein repräsentatives Ensemble, das sich wie eine Art Kontrollzentrum ausgibt. Aber auch all das kann nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass Städte eher dezentral operieren – was gerade deshalb zentralistische Instanzen wie Stadtplaner und Ordnungsagenten anzieht. Je mehr Planungsinstanzen, desto weniger Kontrolle.
In der Stadt ist man aber immer schon drin, egal, wo man einsteigt, reinfährt, aussteigt oder landet. Es muss nicht das Zentrum sein, auch nicht der Anfang, nicht einmal der Ort selbst. Wir steigen also beliebig ein, nämlich hier: Hier geht es nicht um Städte, sondern um Urbanität. Die folgenden Überlegungen sind keine empirischen Überlegungen, sondern eher begriffliche oder besser: diagnostische Überlegungen. Sie sollen freilegen, wovon wir eigentlich reden, wenn wir vom Städtischen reden – vom Städtischen, nicht von konkreten Städten. Städte sind relativ späte Erfind...
