Ich drehe den Schlüssel, trete auf den Gehsteig. In der staubigen Windschutzscheibe des Lincoln Towncar spiegelt sich der diesige Himmel, ein Flugzeug – so nah, dass man die einzelnen Fenster erkennen kann – senkt sich zum Landeanflug. Die umliegenden Scheiben vibrieren im Dröhnen der Turbinen leicht mit. Als sich das Dröhnen von der Straße hebt, wie eine kratzige Decke, die man vom Körper streift, ertönen tieftraurige Männerstimmen, zu Bläsern und Kontrabass, und besingen das Leid der Welt, so lange, bis sie irgendwann in Liebe münden. Liebe, die immer aus dem Leid zu folgen scheint oder als einzig annehmbarer Kern tief darinnen steckt.
Octavio sehe ich heute nicht, obwohl die Garage offen steht. Vor dem Eingang stapelt sich Bauschutt, es riecht nach Terpentin und Sägemehl. Wir hätten uns zugenickt und einen schönen Tag gewünscht. Die Fassade ist mintgrün, flach, kaum Ornamentik. Die Farbe ist Zierde genug und reiht sich ein in den bunten Reigen der Straße. Mintgrün folgt auf Zinnoberrot, Zinnoberrot auf ein gekacheltes Orange. Xola wurde hauptsächlich in den 70ern erbaut. Viele leben seitdem hier.
Xola liegt zwischen dem Centro Histórico und Coyoacán. Vom Zentrum kennt man den Zócalo, den größten Platz Lateinamerikas, mit der wohl größten Flagge der Welt (wenn man diverse Diktaturen ausnimmt), und Coyoacán ist das Herz der alten Boheme: Frida Kahlo wohnte dort mit Diego Rivera unweit...
