Das neugriechische Schattentheater ist der letzte Zeuge einer einst im ganzen östlichen Mittelmeer verbreiteten Spieltätigkeit. Dieses fachlich scheinbar periphere Phänomen führt den Untersuchenden sehr bald schon in zentrale Bereiche von Theaterwissenschaft und Neogräzistik, wobei Walter Puchners Arbeit eine langjährige Lücke schließt, da die griechische Forschung aufgrund der Sprachschranke schwer zugänglich und überdies sehr verstreut ist. Die umfangreiche Literatur rund um das Schattentheater weist zudem bedeutende Urteilsdivergenzen auf, die vom "Epiphänomen türkischer Provenienz" bis zum "einzig echten griechischen Volkstheater" reichen. Diese Ansätze macht der Autor zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Untersuchung.
Die Arbeit gliedert sich in einen historischen und einen hermeneutischen Hauptabschnitt. Ersterer nimmt das Zeitkontinuum zur methodischen Achse, zweiterer beschäftigt sich selektiv mit einzelnen Problemfeldern. In einem dritten Teil werden die Ergebnisse der Arbeit zusammengefasst und in eine erweiterte Problemsichtung gestellt. Ein Anhang bringt ein alphabetisches Verzeichnis der namentlich bekannten Volkskünstler, ein Verzeichnis der Titel der Schattenspiele samt Quellenangabe, ein Register der gedruckten Textserien sowie die Bibliographie zum Thema. Das Nachwort zur Neuauflage von 2014 sorgt für eine detaillierte Präsentation des heutigen Forschungsstandes und ist unmittelbar mit einer Auswahlbibliographie 1972-2012 gekoppelt.
