Bisher war er in einer betreuten Wohnsituation, nun aber darf er sein Glück allein versuchen, und er ist fest entschlossen, es zu schaffen.Elling lebt sich in der neuen Umgebung ein, und er wäre ja nicht Elling, wenn er sich nicht dauernd in irgendwelche Phantasien hineinsteigerte (hat Annelore als Witwe wirklich jedes Interesse an Sex aufgegeben, oder phantasiert sie nicht doch über ihn, den in ihren Augen doch sehr jungen Elling?). Irgendwann traut er sich in ein Café, deren Betreibern er einen Teller schenkt, den er beim Ausräumen im Schuppen gefunden hat, und sie schenken ihm im Gegenzug ein Exemplar der Literaturzeitschrift, die sie herausgeben. Literatur ist aber gar nicht mehr so seins, denn neuerdings hat Elling einen Internetanschluss, und er hat gerade erfahren, dass es Facebook gibt!Nun richtet er unter dem Namen Chris Brenna (so würde er gern heißen, bestimmt wäre er dann ganz anders, so ein richtig lebenshungriger Draufgänger) ein Profil ein und postet dazu ein Foto, das er heimlich mit dem Handy von einem sehr gut aussehenden Fremden gemacht hat. Dann sucht er sich Facebook-Freunde und macht sogar einen eigenen Blog zum Thema Essen auf: "Der Gastrobaron".
