"Meine Herren, es kann ein siebenjähriger, es kann ein dreißigjähriger Krieg werden -, und Wehe dem, der zuerst die Lunte an das Pulverfass schleudert." So lautete die Warnung, ausgesprochen im Deutschen Reichstag von Helmuth Graf von Moltke (1800-1891), dem einstigen Generalstabschef der preußischen und der deutschen Armee, nahezu ein Vierteljahrhundert vor dem Beginn des (Ersten) Weltkrieges. Ein Jahrhundert später wird die Legende von den Ahnungslosen, die schlitternd oder taumelnd, nun gar schlafwandelnd in den Weltkrieg gerieten, reanimiert. Interessen und Ziele derer, die ihn bei vollem Bewusstsein vorbereiteten und auslösten, gehören zu den gemiedenen oder ins Abseits gestellten Themen. Die Fahndung nach den Kriegsschuldigen gilt als antiquiert. Sie jedoch nimmt der Historiker Kurt Pätzold mit der Frage nach Ursachen und Verursachern des "Weltfestes des Todes" (Thomas Mann) wieder auf. Ferner befasst er sich in seiner Arbeit mit den verklärenden Dogmen von Vaterlandsverteidigung und Heldentum, vom unbesiegten deutschen Kaiserheer und der den Nachkommenden auferlegten Pflicht, den angeblich für sie Gestorbenen "nachzueifern".
