Hat sich nach Ende des Kalten Krieges Huntingtons These vom "Zusammenprall der Kulturen" bewahrheitet? Ereignisse wie der 11. September 2001 oder der Karikaturenstreit könnten diese Annahme bestätigen. Das Thema Kultur und Konflikt ist in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten von Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit kontrovers diskutiert worden. Die Bertelsmann Stiftung, die sich seit Jahren für den internationalen Kulturdialog engagiert, veröffentlicht mit "Kultur und Konflikt in globaler Perspektive" eine theoretisch fundierte Herleitung und Definition von kulturell geprägten Konflikten im weltweiten Konfliktgeschehen der Jahre zwischen 1945 und 2007. Der Publikation liegt eine Studie zugrunde, die empirisch untersucht hat, in welchen Konflikten kulturelle Faktoren eine Rolle spielten und inwieweit sie das Konfliktgeschehen hinsichtlich der Gewaltintensität beeinflussten. Die Studie und die aus ihr folgenden Erklärungen sind ein wichtiges Instrument zur Weiterentwicklung des Kulturdialogs für ein friedliches Miteinander in einer globalisierten Welt.
