Max Schimke erlebt in Berlin die Reichspogromnacht am 9. Nov. 1938. Mit 20 Jahren wird er zur Wehrmacht eingezogen. Zunächst an der Westfront eingesetzt, wird er in Frankreich bei einer Familie in der Nähe von Paris einquartiert. Er unterstützt die Familie, will nicht ihr Feind sein. Gefährlich wird es für ihn nach der Verlegung an die Ostfront: Russland, die Ukraine und der Balkan werden seine Einsatzorte. Im Nachhinein sieht Max, dass die Bewahrung in brandgefährlichen Situationen Gottes Eingreifen für ihn war. Nach dem Ende des Krieges vertraut er sich ihm im Glauben an.Bei seinem Tod hinterlässt Max viele handgeschriebene Seiten mit seinen Erfahrungen. In eindrücklichen Szenen schildert er darin, was Krieg und Verfolgung für Menschen bedeuten. Sein Sohn Werner Schimke hat aus diesen Aufzeichnungen ein kostbares, spannendes Buch zusammengestellt.
