Ré Soupault reiste 1950 nach Bayern, Niedersachsen und Schleswig-Holstein, um sich einen Überblick über die Situation von Flüchtlingen und Vertriebenen zu verschaffen. Sie besuchte u.a. die Flüchtlingslager Friedland, Dachau und Geretsried und führte Gespräche mit den Verantwortlichen der Lager, mit Politikern und mit vielen Flüchtlingen und Vertriebenen. Sie beschreibt die erschütternden Zustände in Massenunterkünften, berichtet über neue Flüchtlingssiedlungen, schreibt über Verlust der Heimat und die Hoffnungen für einen Neuanfang. Ré Soupaults Text ist von besonderer Klarheit, an Fakten orientiert und gleichzeitig ein bewegendes Zeit-Zeugnis einer Frau, die 1928 Deutschland verlassen hatte und danach nur noch für kurze Besuche dorthin zurückkehren wird. Ihre Fotografien schließen an ihr großes fotografische Werk aus den 1930/40 Jahren an. Ihr Text ist erschreckend aktuell im Vergleich zu den heutigen Reportagen über das Schicksal der Flüchtlinge aus Afrika und Syrien.
