Ländliche Räume gelten oft ausschließlich als Auswanderungsregionen, von denen aus Teile der ansässigen Bevölkerung auf direktem Weg in die städtischen Zentren wandern. Die historische Migrationsforschung hat gezeigt, dass solche vereinfachten Bilder kaum der komplexen Realität entsprechen. Neben der Wanderung vom Land in die Stadt gab es auch den umgekehrten Weg von der Stadt aufs Land sowie dauerhafte oder befristete Migration von einer ländlichen Region in eine andere. Die Motive der migrierenden Menschen waren vielfältig, von der Vermeidung von Nachteilen vor Ort bis hin zur Wahrnehmung von Chancen andernorts. Der Band versammelt Beiträge aus verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen zu Aspekten ländlicher Mobilität und Migration: Displaced Persons nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, österreichische Gastarbeiterinnen und Gastarbeiter im Ausland, nach Österreich angeworbene Arbeitskräfte aus Jugoslawien und der Türkei, Wohnsitzverlegungen im Zuge von Existenz- und Familiengründung, die oft weiträumige Mobilität von EU-Bürgerinnen und -bürgern innerhalb der Schengen-Grenzen, die Wohnmigration im Umfeld urbaner Zentren. Die Beiträge machen einmal mehr deutlich, dass Migration kein ungewöhnliches, daher zu behebendes Gegenwartsproblem, sondern ein normales, historisch in verschiedenen Ausprägungen fassbares Phänomen darstellt.
